Gerardo Otzen

Gerardo Otzen

Welcome,

Hi, I’m Rosco Pennell, I’m from New Zealand and I’ve been organising motorcycle adventures through South America since 2008. I’ve been involved in motorcycling for some 45 years and have been fortunate enough to have ridden motorcycles in many parts of the world including Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, the USA, Hong Kong, Austria, Germany, Luxembourg, Italy, Australia and New Zealand.

After a chance meeting with Gerardo Otzen, a citizen of the south Patagonian city of Punta Arenas, Chile, we decided to team up and form Rosco’s Rocky Road Adventures, with the intent to share our expertise and knowledge of South America with like-minded adventurous motorcyclists from New Zealand and Australia. I organise the Australasian side of the operation, including the return shipping of the motorcycles from New Zealand. So far we have had numerous fun-filled adventures and continue to return to experience more of this fantastic part of the world. If you think you might like to join us on one of our adventures then take a look at what we’re planning to do next in the adventures section.

Hola, I am Gerardo Otzen, a veterinarian with German, Scottish and Croatian heritage. I have over 40 years of experience riding motorcycles on my 10,200 hectare estancia and throughout Chile, Argentina, Bolivia and Peru. I look after all accommodation, financial and transport logistics in South America and I am your English/Spanish speaking guide. I will help to translate and resolve any problems with language along the way.

The Shadow of the Andes adventure in 2012 was the most amazing adventure either of us have ever experienced. Rosco and Gerardo had organised everything, including the route, all our accommodation and local guides for areas where we weren't driving. We covered 10,000 km through 4 countries, made 7 border crossings over the Andes, reaching a maximum altitude of 5,023 m. All this was achieved without any problems, under the skilful leadership of Rosco and Gerardo. We had so much fun, we’re going back again this year!

- Paul and Melean Absolum

Having toured both New Zealand and Australia extensively by motorcycle, South America had always been on my bucket list. When the opportunity came about to tour with the first Rosco's Rocky Road Adventure in 2008, I was in. It fulfilled all that I expected from a motorcycle adventure, and as it ticked all the boxes, I joined them again for another great tour in 2011. For anyone looking for well run motorcycle adventures through the vastness of the Americas, look no further - Rosco and Gerardo will give you a great motorcycling experience through South America and beyond.

A 28 day tour through Chile and Argentina filled with adventure, food, wine and culture

They have been paving the roads in Chile and Argentina as fast as we can ride them, so here is a fantastic opportunity to ride your own touring motorcycle through South America. The Tour is designed for couples to enjoy their motorcycle together and to visit many destinations that most people only dream about (or haven't even heard of!).

We will then head southeast to visit San Pedro de Atacama, before crossing into Argentina via the magnificent Paso Jama that runs along the Bolivian border, to enjoy the picturesque city of Salta for a couple of days. Moving south again we visit Cafayate, then pass through the Taffi del Valle to stay in Termas del Rio Hondo for a bit of hot thermal swimming and pampering before we continue down to Chilicito, via the Miranda Pass on Ruta 40 then down to San Juan for one night.

We will then spend 3 nights in fabulous Mendoza, taking in a wine tour and lunch at the famous Lopez Winery, followed by our final night in Argentina at Uspallata. The next day we will ride the spectacular Paso del Cristo Redentor with fabulous views of the highest summit in the Americas - the 6,961 metre Aconcagua - then ride the highway back to Vina del Mar for our grand farewell dinner.

The Patagonian Expedition

Vehicles Dual-sport Motorcycles
YYYY-MM-DD, UTC-03:00 2018-11-01, 37 days
A stunning 37 day round-trip from Santiago through some of the most spectacular landscapes on Earth

You will be picked up from the Airport in Santiago and transferred to the seaside city of Vina del Mar, where you will reunite with your motorcycle and prepare for a ride to one of the most remote and incredibly beautiful regions on Earth.

The Expedition will cross the Andes into Argentina through the remote Paso Vergara, travel down to the lakeside city of Bariloche (the chocolate capital of Argentina) and make its way across the Pampas to the Atlantic coast. We will visit Puerto Madryn to see the whales as we make our way south along the rugged coastline.

We then cross the Magellan Straits to Tierra del Fuego and ride down to Ushuaia and the end of the road at Rio Moat. This is as far south as you can ride your motorcycle in the world. With only one direction left to go, we turn and head north via Ushuaia and Punta Arenas. We spend a couple of nights in the magnificent Torres del Paine, with its towering granite peaks reaching for the sky, surrounded by aqua blue lakes.

Crossing back into Argentina we pick up the infamous Ruta 40 that will take us up to El Calafate, where we will visit the ice blue Perito Moreno Glacier. We take another magnificent pass into Chile and check out the fabulous Mármol Caves before picking up the Carretera Austral, which winds its way along the base of the Andes and the Pacific ocean amidst waterfalls, tiny villages and cloud forest. This is one of the most spectacular and scenic rides in the world.

We will then head to the picturesque island of Chiloé and slow the pace a little as we enjoy this quaint and historic island. Leaving the quiet relaxed lifestyle behind, we depart for our tour around the fabulous Lakes District, with its smouldering volcanoes and pristine lakes.

Hitting the road again we will negotiate another high Andes pass into Argentina and ride through the windswept Pamas up to Uspallata for our final night in Argentina. We then pass through Paso del Cristo Redentor into Chile for our final night of the Expedition.

Riding Conditions:

The Expedition includes around 1700 km of metal roads, including the Carretera Austral and Ruta 40, which can be very windswept and contain a lot of thick gravel. A dual-sport motorcycle is essential and running the likes of Continental TKC 80s is required.

The High Andes Adventure

Vehicles Dual-sport Motorcycles
YYYY-MM-DD, UTC-03:00 2019-03-01, 41 days
A high altitude adventure visiting the Sacred Valley of the Incas and the extraordinary Machu Picchu

The planning for this impressive 41 day adventure to Chile, Argentina, Bolivia and Peru is well under way and we have some new and exciting roads mapped out for 2019. Most are now paved, and we'll only take the unpaved roads when we have no option. This will enable us to take a wider range of motorcycles and to accommodate a wider range of rider skill levels.

We will be shipping the vehicles out of Auckland bound for the Chilean port of Valparaiso, in a 6 metre (20 ft) container. We'll fly out of New Zealand on the 3rd March 2019 on a direct Lan Chile flight to Santiago, transferring to the coastal city of Vina del Mar.

After clearing our motos from aduana (customs) we will head north, turning east over the Andes via Paso Redentor on one of the most amazing roads in South America. We'll have fabulous views of the highest summit in the Americas; the 6,961 metre Aconcagua. We spend our first night at Uspallata, in the province of Mendoza, Argentina.

From Uspallata we'll head north on roads less travelled through Barreal and on to Los Flores, to a little boutique hotel where we'll prepare for our next challenge - negotiating our way over one of the most spectacular passes in the Andes; the mind-blowing Paso del Agua Negra. We will be carrying extra fuel as we cross into Chile at 4,700 m, as there are no petrol stations nor cafés for around 350 km. That night we will stay in Vicuna, in Chile's Pisco Valley.

The next day we will make our way to the coastal town of Tongoy, and relax for a couple of days. Moving north, we'll head along the Chilean coast to Copiapo, where we turn east again and cross back into Argentina over the highest pass in the Andes, the spectacular Paso San Francisco (4,763 m), to a beautiful mountain lodge. This is our biggest day with over 500 km and no petrol stations nor cafés, and is followed by a short hop to Belen the next day. From there we'll head north until we reach the fascinating city of Salta, where we have two days to enjoy this lovely Argentinean destination.

Departing Salta and heading north once more, we'll ride through spectacular lush rain forest (hopefully avoiding the rain!) with a lunch stop at Purmamarca, followed by a magnificent switch-back road that will take us to Tilcara for the night. This small rustic town, nestled within the Argentinean Altiplano, is where we will prepare for our next challenge into Bolivia. We will cross the border at Villazon, travelling north to Tupiza for a night. This was where Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid made their last stand.

Leaving Tupiza we follow the Cordillera Oriental, while our destination will be the mining city of Potosi, where we'll spend our first night at altitude. Leaving Potosi, we cut through the Cordillera Oriental towards one of the world's most diverse landscapes, full of geothermal activity and featuring the largest salt reserve in the world, as we cross Salar de Uyuni.

From Uyuni we drive via Oruru up to the highest capital city in the world, La Paz, where we take a day off; well, sort of ... we ride 100 km to Coroico for lunch, and return along the Yungas Road, the Bolivian 'Road of Death'. Departing La Paz we cross the mighty Lake Titicaca into Peru and visit las Flotantes (Floating Islands) of the Uros People of Puno. We move on to Cusco and the Inca ruins at Ollantaytambo and Machu Picchu by train.

We have a full day exploring the Sacred Valley, checking out the artisans, the people and the scenery. We will leave early for a full day at Machu Picchu so you will have plenty of time to explore this amazing archeological site. We return to Ollantaytambo by train for the night, continuing on to Cusco the next day, arriving in plenty of time to enjoy the historic city.

The following day we go south-west to Chivay and the Colca Canyon area and on to Arequipa for two nights. From Arequipa we head south to Arica and back into Chile, following the coast down to Iquique, and cutting back to San Pedro de Atacama via Calama. We will leave San Pedro de Atacama headed west, passing salt encrusted lakes with flamingos standing tall in the mirror-like lakes on our way to Paso Jama, and on to San Antonio de Los Cobres for a night at 4,000 m.

From San Antonio de los Cobres we head south, taking the infamous Ruta 40 down to Cachi and on to Cafayate. We then head inland to the Tucuman province, taking in the mountain scenery to our next two day stop over at La Rioja, via Andalgalá, where we have a day to check out Minas Capillitas; where they mine the semi-precious stone rhodochrosite.

We keep moving south and visit Talampaya National Park on our way to Villa Union. We then head back into Mendoza province, San Juan and down to Uspallata, where we spend our last night in Argentina before crossing the Andes for the last time via Paso del Cristo Redentor (which is where we came into Argentina 40 days ago if you remember). We then ride the spectacular highway back to Vina del Mar for a grand farewell dinner.

If you choose to take an earlier/later flight then you will have to make your own way to Vina del Mar. Lan Chile run a bus service to Vina del Mar later in the day.

Shipping of Your Motorcycle

The first thing you need to secure is a shipping platform or base that will support and protect your motorcycle while in transit to South America. We have a stock of these.

To get all the bikes in we may have to top stack 4 or 6 bikes. The standard platform / base / height dimensions of 1150mm O/A must NOT be exceeded, therefore you may have to remove your windscreen and mirrors etc.

Motorcycles may be required for shipping up to 6 or 7 weeks prior to the start of the adventure. Delivery of your Motorcycle to Mondiale Shipping in Mangere, Auckland, is your care and cost.

Think about this ...

“Discovery and adventure is difficult these days because of our access to so much information. It’s entirely possible to see everything before-hand that’s worthy of seeing, thus, researching too much can take all the excitement out of an ADVENTURE. Seeing the expected isn’t the formula for adventure.”

Tu pasaporte a la aventura (we are your passport to adventure!)

Hasta pronto (until soon),
